Social bookmarking has just started to be described by search engine optimisation experts as the new backlinking. In other words, it is becoming the primary offsite factor for ranking in Google. We still don’t try to rank a site soley by social bookmarking, however we now build a predetermined number of links to a page and then build the page’s profile to search engines primarily through social bookmarking.
What is social bookmarking?
Social Bookmarking is displaying a post with a link to your site on a social bookmarking website. The purpose of social bookmarking websites is to provide a forum for web surfers to place links to sites they like so that they can visit them again or so that other people can read their review of the website and visit it themselves.
A good example of a social bookmarking website is digg.com. At digg, visitors register then click on submit link. They are then either shown where that site has already been linked to so that they can add their review or comment to that page or a new post is started. You can also vote for the link which will increase the ranking of the page on digg.
There are many other sites you can bookmark your webpages on as well. Some that I use are diigo.com, netvibes.com, linktopia.com and netvine.com. Digg is still my favorite for ease of use and good pagerank.
What happens when I social bookmark my website?
There are two main advantages. Firstly you can direct traffic from the social bookmarking website. These sites have huge numbers of loyal visitors who pour over every listing looking for websites of interest. If you post a good quality review of your website people will visit you from the link back to your site. The nice part of this is that you get an immediate flow of traffic to your site.
Secondly, you are working towards increasing your pagerank by building backlinks to your website. These social bookmarking sites generally have high pagerank and many are dofollow backlinks. Therefore these are valuable links for improving your Google rankings over the next weeks and months. Moreover they are among the easiest backlinks you can get.
